Privacy policy
This site uses a privacy-respecting analytics service (Plausible Analytics, operated by Plausible Insights OÜ, Estonia) that is cookieless, anonymous, and exempt from cookie-banner requirements under the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive. No identifiers are stored, no fingerprinting is performed, no profile is built, and no data is sold or shared with third parties for advertising or any other commercial purpose.
Data controller. Marc Wieland, the author of this publication, is the data controller for this website. Contact: marc@wieland.global.
What is processed, in aggregate only. Page views, country (derived from IP at request time, after which the IP is discarded and never stored), referring site, browser and device type, downloads of the PDF, audio plays and listening progress in 25 per cent milestones, and how far readers progress through each essay. None of this is connected to a person, a session, or a return visit. Plausible processes this data on servers located in the European Union.
Legal basis. Processing is performed on the basis of legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR and Article 31(2)(d) of the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection: understanding aggregate readership of a freely-accessible publication, with no measurable impact on individual privacy because no personal data is collected.
Retention. Aggregate analytics data is retained for the lifetime of the publication. Because no individual records exist, there are no individual records to delete.
Your rights. Under the GDPR and the Swiss FADP you have the right to information, rectification, deletion, portability and objection in respect of personal data held about you. Because this site does not hold personal data about any individual visitor, these rights do not produce meaningful outcomes here. If you would prefer not to be counted in the aggregate at all, the simplest method is to use a tracker-blocking browser extension such as uBlock Origin; the analytics script will not load and your visit will not be recorded.
